Armed pirates boarded the cargo ship Lutuf off Somalia’s coast on August 17, the sixth hijacking since April — a resurgence not seen in years.
It’s the sixth hijacking in the region since April, part of a broader spike that has also seen the oil tanker Honour 25 seized in April with 17 crew and roughly 18,500 barrels of oil aboard, and the Togo-flagged tanker MT Eureka taken near Yemen’s port of Qana. By current counts, six vessels remain in pirates’ hands with more than 100 crew members held hostage — the sharpest resurgence of Somali piracy since the height of the crisis over a decade ago.
