McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd said that a major milestone has been reached at the London Gateway Berth 5 expansion works for DP World, with the main dredging campaign now underway following significant progress across the project, including the new quay wall, permanent anchoring system and backfilling works. Using a specialist backhoe dredger, material is being excavated from the riverbed in front of the quay wall to create the required depth and profile for the future deep-water berth. Once complete, Berth 5 will establish London Gateway as the UK’s largest container port, increasing capacity to support the continued growth of UK trade.
The dredging campaign follows a £1bn investment announced by DP World at the UK Government’s International Investment Summit for the construction of the fifth and sixth berths to further enhance the container port’s handling capacity and contribution to the UK economy. The expansion will take the total number of berths able to receive the world’s largest container ships to six, with the full quayside stretching more than 2.5km in length able to simultaneously receive six vessels, each more than 400 meters long, once complete by the end of the decade.
