Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) has announced a €500 million expansion of its Maasvlakte 2 container terminal, adding a fourth deep-sea berth capable of handling the world’s largest container ships as the operator expands automation and electrification across the facility. The project, developed in consultation with shareholders DP World, CMA CGM, Ocean Network Express (ONE) and HMM, will make full use of the quay capacity allocated to RWG by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and work will proceed in stages alongside a third-berth expansion announced in 2023 that RWG expects to bring into commercial operation in 2027.
As part of the investment plan, RWG intends to add five ship-to-shore cranes, 22 automated stacking cranes across 11 storage modules and 24 automated guided vehicles, while also evaluating deployment of DP World’s BoxBay high-density storage system for roughly 30,000 TEU of empty containers, a technology already piloted at Jebel Ali and under development at London Gateway. The latest phase brings RWG’s cumulative investment in the terminal to approximately €2 billion, with the additional funding expected to be financed in part by the terminal’s existing lenders.
