Hanwha Ocean said it signed a contract with Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation to build six 13,650-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, in a deal valued at approximately 1.5527 trillion won, or about $1.06 billion. The vessels will be constructed at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard in South Korea and delivered to the Taiwanese carrier in phases through the second half of 2029. The order marks a repeat contract for Hanwha Ocean, coming roughly one year after Yang Ming placed its first newbuilding order with the shipyard in September 2025 for seven 15,880-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, bringing the combined total under the two contracts to 13 vessels.
The new ships will be equipped with Hanwha Ocean’s independently developed Type-B LNG fuel tanks constructed from high-manganese steel, a technology the shipbuilder says offers a cost advantage over conventional nickel-alloy steel or aluminum tanks while maintaining strength at cryogenic temperatures as low as minus 163 degrees Celsius. The vessels will also be built with ammonia fuel-ready specifications, giving Yang Ming the option to convert propulsion systems as emissions regulations tighten. The order is part of a broader fleet renewal push by Yang Ming, which expects a total of 24 new vessels — including 18 LNG dual-fuel ships and six methanol dual-fuel-ready ships — to enter service by 2030 as the carrier replaces older tonnage in the 4,250-TEU to 6,500-TEU range on its East-West trade routes.
