Spot rates to move a 40-foot container from Shanghai to New York rose another 10% this week to average $8,706, the second consecutive weekly increase, while Shanghai-to-Los Angeles rates climbed 6% to $6,244, according to Drewry’s World Container Index. The transpacific rally stands in contrast to Asia-Europe lanes, where rates have started easing after an early-summer peak.
Drewry’s overall World Container Index slipped 1% to $4,473 per 40-foot box on the back of the softer Asia-Europe and transpacific westbound numbers, even as carriers continue managing capacity through blank sailings. Congestion at ports and inland bottlenecks remain a persistent drag on schedule reliability across most major trades.
