One Saudi Arabian and one South Korean oil tanker were struck by unknown projectiles on the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, which said no casualties or environmental impact had been reported from either incident. The strikes came as renewed fighting between Iran and the United States intensified, with the U.S. having launched strikes on Iranian forces on Larak Island the previous day and Iran retaliating with strikes on U.S. bases in Jordan.
The attacks followed a warning from President Donald Trump of further escalation in the conflict with Iran, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran remained open to returning to peace talks if Washington moved in that direction. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 2% to $92 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate climbed to $88 a barrel in early Tuesday trading as markets reacted to the escalating confrontation along one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.
