The US military came within minutes of boarding a Chinese-flagged vessel in the Middle East this spring after an intelligence report generated with the help of artificial intelligence wrongly concluded the ship was transporting nuclear weapons components, according to a CNN report citing four sources familiar with the episode. The report was circulated across the US military during the war with Iran, and officials responded by scrambling military aircraft and preparing armed servicemembers to intercept and board the vessel before the operation was called off at the last moment.
The false report originated when a special operations command analyst queried a chatbot about intelligence reporting on the ship’s manifest, information that had originated with US Special Operations Command Pacific in Hawaii. The chatbot inaccurately identified the cargo, and the finding was then compiled into a formal intelligence assessment before officials scrutinized the report further and determined it was entirely false; CNN said it was unable to establish what the vessel was actually carrying. The incident, which surfaces as the US military and intelligence community push to expand AI use across targeting and analysis functions, comes just days before Chinese President Xi Jinping is due to travel to Washington for talks with President Donald Trump.
