A new China-Europe Arctic container service has begun sailing the Northern Sea Route, with Sea Legend Line’s “China-Europe Arctic Express” running seven ships across eight sailings between Ningbo and Felixstowe through early October. Cargo is consolidated from several Chinese ports before departing roughly once a week, cutting the Shanghai-to-St. Petersburg transit from 38-45 days via Suez to just 23-25 days while avoiding the Red Sea and Strait of Malacca entirely.
The route depends on Russian-controlled waters and warming Arctic conditions that keep the passage ice-free for longer each year, deepening a shipping partnership between Beijing and Moscow that Western sanctions have pushed closer together. Analysts remain cautious about the route’s broader impact: Coface estimates only about 3.5% of current East Asia-Europe-North America trade could realistically shift north, with security concerns and the short sailing season still limiting uptake.
