DP World has delivered three new mobile harbour cranes to the Port of Tartous, marking one of the first concrete milestones in its $800 million programme to modernize the Syrian port under a 30-year concession agreement. The Dubai-based operator took over management of Tartous in November 2025 following a formal handover from Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, part of a broader push to position the port as a regional trade hub linking southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
The investment plan includes dredging works to accommodate larger vessels, refurbishment of quay walls, deployment of additional cargo-handling equipment, new digital systems and workforce development programmes. The Tartous concession is among the highest-profile foreign infrastructure investments in Syria since the fall of the Assad government, and is being closely watched as a test case for wider reconstruction-linked investment in the country’s ports and logistics sector.
