COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation has placed an order for four new liquefied natural gas carriers with Jiangnan Shipyard, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, in a contract valued at more than $900 million. The order adds to a wave of LNG newbuild activity across Chinese and South Korean yards this year, as owners rush to secure capacity ahead of rising liquefaction output worldwide.
The move follows a series of container ship orders from sister units within the wider COSCO Shipping group earlier in 2026, including a $2.2 billion deal for a dozen LNG dual-fuel boxships, underscoring the group’s broader push to diversify and modernize its fleet across both gas-carrying and container segments. Analysts have flagged that new LNG export capacity coming online through the end of the decade may still outpace the current global LNG carrier orderbook, keeping demand for newbuild slots elevated.
