A Greek-owned oil tanker was struck by a projectile off the coast of Oman, damaging its engine room and leaving the vessel without propulsion near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The vessel has been identified as the Metro Venetian, an LR2 tanker with a capacity of 115,000 deadweight tons, built in 2025 and managed by Greece-based Metrostar Management. The attack occurred on Monday night approximately nine nautical miles northeast of Ash Shishah, Oman. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the tanker’s master said an unknown projectile struck the vessel, causing damage to its engine room and disabling it entirely.
All crew members were reported safe following the incident, and no marine pollution was observed in its aftermath, though authorities have launched an investigation and the origin of the projectile and the party responsible have not been identified. UKMTO advised vessels operating in the area to exercise increased caution as the inquiry continues. According to Greek shipping trade press, the vessel subsequently made it safely under escort to Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates, after having been struck near the engine room while sailing nine nautical miles off Oman.
