Maritime pilots across Argentina have ended an indefinite strike that began August 1 in protest at Decree 690/2026, a government order deregulating pilotage services by letting ship captains navigate Argentine ports without a licensed harbour pilot if they hold a route-knowledge certificate. More than 100 vessels were left waiting to enter or leave Argentine ports at the height of the dispute, with Bahía Blanca, Rosario and Buenos Aires among the terminals affected.
Under the agreement that ended the stoppage, pilots accepted a 20% reduction in their rates, the government agreed to suspend the deregulation decree, and both sides established a joint working group to review the sector going forward. The disruption fell during Argentina’s Southern Hemisphere harvest season, a critical window for the country’s soy, corn and wheat exports moving down the Paraná River.
