Maritime authorities in Shanghai and Ningbo triggered mandatory port closure protocols and phased gate-in halts as Typhoon Saudel bore down on China’s eastern seaboard, the latest in a run of consecutive storms to disrupt the region’s container supply chains this summer. The closures add to what has become the worst global port congestion on record, with 4.31 million TEU of containership capacity — 12.6% of the world fleet — currently caught in anchorage backlogs.
North Asia accounts for roughly half of that global backlog, and analysts expect the queue to lengthen further as vessels delayed by the storm bunch up once terminals reopen. Shippers moving cargo through China’s east coast ports in the coming weeks should expect knock-on delays even after the weather itself clears.
