Germany’s ver.di union expanded strike action across the country’s largest ports in mid-August, calling a 24-hour warning strike beginning with the night shift on August 17 that spread to Hamburg and Wilhelmshaven, followed by a full stoppage at Bremerhaven from 06:00 on August 18 to 06:00 the next day. The action, tied to a wage dispute under the ZDS collective bargaining agreement, hit more than a dozen port companies including HHLA’s Altenwerder, Burchardkai and Tollerort container terminals and the EUROGATE terminal in Hamburg.
The stoppages add to a summer of labour friction across European and Latin American ports, compounding existing schedule pressure from Red Sea diversions and Panama Canal restrictions. Terminal operators have warned that repeated short strikes, even at 24 hours each, can take several days to fully clear from congested berthing schedules.
