Greek Shipowners' Newbuilding Orderbook Surpasses 1,000 Vessels for First Time
Oct 3, 2026 — The Greek-owned newbuilding orderbook has crossed the 1,000-vessel mark for the first time, according to new data from Xclusiv Shipbrokers.

The Greek-owned orderbook has exceeded the 1,000-vessel threshold for the first time, with Greek shipowners pursuing a massive shipbuilding programme that reached 1,005 vessels across the main ship types at the end of September 2026, according to a report by Xclusiv Shipbrokers cited by Naftemporiki. Investment by Greek shipowners in new vessels has been rising rapidly since mid-2023, part of a sustained fleet-renewal drive that has made Greek interests the single largest national ordering bloc in several core shipping segments, including tankers, dry bulk carriers and LNG carriers.

The milestone caps a sharp acceleration over the past two years: the Greek orderbook stood at just 727 vessels at the end of December 2025 and 838 vessels by March 2026, before climbing past the symbolic 1,000-ship level by September. Despite hundreds of new vessels of all types having been delivered during this period, new orders have far outpaced deliveries, underscoring owners’ continued appetite for newbuilding capacity even as shipyard prices remain elevated and uncertainty persists over future marine fuel choices. The buildout follows a broader expansion of the Greek-owned merchant fleet, which earlier in 2026 was reported by the Union of Greek Shipowners to have topped 5,800 vessels and roughly 19% of global tonnage by deadweight.
