Greece’s Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, visited the port of Piraeus accompanied by Hellenic Coast Guard Chief, Vice Admiral Christos Kontorouchas, as the return flow of travelers from the Greek islands reached its seasonal peak. The minister was briefed at Gate E2, in front of the passenger-vehicle ferry Ariadni, on the operational measures being applied to manage the sharp rise in passenger traffic through Greece’s largest port.
Kikilias said that in the coming days the return of travelers from the islands to the country’s major ports, chiefly Piraeus, would reach its high point, underscoring the logistical strain on port authorities and the Coast Guard during the final stretch of the summer season. The minister also referenced the Coast Guard’s role in this year’s wildfires, noting that its personnel took part in evacuating hundreds of residents from fire-affected areas, work he said reflected the broader operational demands placed on the service beyond routine port and maritime safety duties.
