China’s dominance in global shipbuilding just hit a new milestone. Hengli Heavy Industries has overtaken rivals to become the world’s largest single shipyard by order backlog, after receiving 207 vessel orders in the first half of 2026 — the largest order intake ever recorded by one yard in a six-month period.
The surge reflects owners racing to lock in newbuild slots amid tightening vessel supply, rising freight rates, and a wave of fleet renewal driven by upcoming environmental regulations. It also cements China’s grip on global shipbuilding capacity at a moment when Western and Korean yards are struggling to keep pace.
