Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani read a joint statement on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, backed by roughly 80 countries, declaring that “Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten international security and navigational rights and freedoms.” The statement, whose signatories included Gulf Arab states and major Western powers, called for the full restoration of navigational rights and principles without delay, and urged that commercial vessels be granted safe, secure and unhindered passage through the waterway without transit fees, conditions or other charges.
The coalition also linked the Hormuz crisis to escalating instability in the Red Sea, condemning what it called the Houthis’ decision to resume conflict in Yemen, their continued strikes on Saudi Arabia and attacks in the Red Sea, warning that a Houthi advance toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would further heighten risks to international shipping, maritime security and global trade. The statement also called for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, adopted in March, which condemned Iranian attacks on Gulf states and Jordan and actions aimed at obstructing the strait, as diplomats noted that separate US-Iran contacts have touched on terms for reopening the chokepoint through which a substantial share of the world’s seaborne oil trade transits.
