The European Commission adopted the 15th edition of its European List of Ship Recycling Facilities in March 2026, adding the first approved yard in Germany, at Emden, and renewing four existing EU-listed facilities in Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania and Spain. The list determines which yards EU-flagged vessels may legally be sent to for dismantling under the bloc’s Ship Recycling Regulation.
Separately, the International Labour Organization and BIMCO launched a pilot Employment Injury Scheme in Bangladesh in March 2026, aiming to guarantee compensation for yard workers and their families in the event of injury or death — a direct response to safety conditions at facilities like those in Chattogram, which along with the rest of Bangladesh accounted for roughly half of the 71 ships dismantled worldwide in the second quarter of 2026.
