Hapag-Lloyd Takes Stake in Rotterdam’s APM Terminals Maasvlakte II

German carrier Hapag-Lloyd has acquired a significant stake in APM Terminals' Maasvlakte II facility in Rotterdam, deepening its control over key European port infrastructure.

Hapag-Lloyd has taken a significant equity stake in APM Terminals’ Maasvlakte II facility at the Port of Rotterdam, one of Europe’s most advanced deep-sea container terminals. The move continues a broader trend of major ocean carriers investing directly in terminal infrastructure to secure berth priority, control costs, and reduce exposure to third-party congestion — the same congestion pressures driving record freight rates elsewhere.

Rotterdam remains Europe’s busiest port by cargo volume, and Maasvlakte II’s automated, deep-water berths make it a strategic asset for any carrier looking to guarantee capacity on the Asia-Europe trade lane.
