All 36 major ports from Maine to Texas are running at full capacity with no active labor disputes, as the six-year master contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the US Maritime Alliance continues to hold through its term to September 30, 2030. The deal, reached in January 2025 after a tentative agreement averted a threatened strike, has kept East and Gulf Coast terminals stable for over a year and a half.
The contract permits terminal operators to pursue technology upgrades and automation projects while preserving existing ILA job classifications — a compromise that defused the automation dispute at the heart of the union’s original strike threat. With no work stoppage anticipated before the decade’s end, US carriers and shippers have one less disruption to plan around even as congestion and geopolitical rerouting continue to roil ports elsewhere in the world.
