Singapore, the world’s largest bunkering hub, notched a decarbonization milestone this month as Vitol Bunkers completed the port’s first bio-bunkering operation using a Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) biofuel blend. The operation signals growing commercial viability for biofuel bunkering at scale, not just in pilot volumes.
With shipping under increasing pressure to cut emissions ahead of tightening IMO regulations, biofuel blending offers operators a way to reduce carbon intensity without waiting for newbuild alternative-fuel vessels (like the LNG and hydrogen cruise ships above) to enter service. Singapore’s position as the top global bunkering port makes this an early signal worth watching for wider industry adoption.
