Ilya Espino de Marotta was sworn in as Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority on Monday, beginning a seven-year term running through 2033 and becoming the first woman to lead the interoceanic waterway. She rose from deputy administrator to the top post after more than four decades at the Canal, having joined in 1985 as a marine engineer and later playing a key role in delivering the multi-billion-dollar expansion of the waterway’s locks. Her career has spanned engineering, dredging, accounting, investment planning and maritime operations, before she became executive vice-president of engineering and programme management, and she served as vice-president of operations before becoming deputy administrator in 2020, followed by an appointment in 2024 as the Canal’s first sustainability officer.
Espino de Marotta takes charge at a difficult moment for the waterway, which handles roughly 5% of world trade annually and is again grappling with reduced rainfall linked to El Niño conditions that have forced authorities to restrict the number of daily transits between the Atlantic and Pacific. As administrator, she will oversee implementation of the Canal’s Strategic Vision 2025-2035, which puts water security, operational reliability and resilience at the centre of the waterway’s next phase, including development of the Río Indio reservoir, new port terminals on both coasts and planned energy and logistics corridors. She succeeds Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, who completed a seven-year term as administrator on the same day she took office.
